Osteopath for back pain in Antwerp: can it help?

EEline, osteopath D.O. Last updated on 25 July 2026 6 min read
Short answer

Yes, an osteopath can offer relief for many forms of back pain, especially mechanical low back pain, lumbago (a locked back) and stiffness without warning signs. The osteopath uses their hands to find movement restrictions in the vertebrae, muscles and pelvis, and treats them gently, without medication. Most people feel improvement after 1 to 3 sessions. In case of radiating pain, loss of strength or numbness in the leg, medical examination is needed first.

Which back complaints does an osteopath treat?

Osteopathy focuses on complaints with a mechanical cause: joints, muscles, connective tissue and nerves that do not move freely. With back pain this can include:

  • Mechanical low back pain, the most common form, caused by an awkward movement, prolonged sitting or overload.
  • Lumbago (a locked back), a sudden, sharp block in the lower back.
  • Sciatica and radiating pain, pain that travels from the back into the buttock or leg.
  • Herniated disc, often treatable with a gentle, adapted approach, in consultation with your doctor.
  • Pelvic and SI joint complaints, including back pain during and after pregnancy.
  • Osteoarthritis and sport-related back pain, to relieve complaints and restore mobility.

How does an osteopathic treatment for back pain work?

An osteopath looks not only at the spot where it hurts, but at the whole body. Back pain often arises from compensations elsewhere: a stiff hip, an old ankle injury or tension in the abdomen. That is why every treatment starts with a thorough interview and a movement assessment.

The osteopath then works manually and gently: with mobilisations, stretches and targeted techniques, movement restrictions are released so that muscles relax and joints move freely again. You also receive advice on posture, movement and exercises for at home, so that the complaint does not return.

When to see an osteopath, and when to see a doctor?

For ordinary, mechanical back pain you can go straight to the osteopath. Some complaints, however, point to a cause that requires medical examination first.

Consult a (family) doctor or the emergency department first in case of:

  • loss of strength, numbness or tingling in one or both legs;
  • loss of control over bladder or bowel (medical emergency);
  • fever, unexplained weight loss or feeling generally unwell;
  • back pain after a fall, accident or serious injury;
  • persistent, severe pain at night or pain that keeps getting worse.

When in doubt we always consult your doctor. Osteopathy does not replace a medical diagnosis or treatment.

What does an osteopath for back pain cost in Antwerp?

What can you do yourself for back pain?

  • Keep moving. Lying flat for a long time slows recovery, whereas gentle movement helps.
  • Warmth (a warm bath or hot water bottle) relaxes cramped muscles.
  • Vary your postures and stand up regularly if you sit a lot.
  • Strengthen your core with light, regular exercises once the acute pain eases.
  • Lift with your legs, not with your back, and distribute weight symmetrically.

Frequently asked questions about back pain and osteopathy

How many sessions do I need for back pain?
Most people feel improvement after 1 to 3 sessions. For acute complaints 2 to 3 treatments are often enough; for long-standing or recurring back pain a longer course may be needed.
Is osteopathy for back pain supported by science?
The evidence is limited but encouraging. Clinical guidelines for low back pain, such as those of NICE (UK) and the Belgian Federal Health Care Knowledge Centre (KCE), recommend staying active and mention manual therapy as a possible option for short-term relief. Osteopathy is not a substitute for medical care in case of serious causes.
Can I see an osteopath with a herniated disc?
Often yes. With a confirmed disc herniation we work gently and in an adapted way, in consultation with your doctor. In case of severe loss of strength, numbness or loss of control over bladder or bowel this is a medical emergency, so consult a doctor immediately.
Can I come without a referral from my GP?
Yes, in Belgium you can book an appointment directly without a referral letter. Bringing recent imaging or a referral letter does help to build a full picture more quickly.
Is an osteopathic treatment painful?
Usually not. The techniques are gentle. After the treatment you may feel some muscle stiffness on the first day, like after exercise; that goes away on its own.
